From Craig Zobel, director of 2012’s most uncomfortable movie, Compliance, comes a post-apocalyptic take on a most awkward situation: The three’s a crowd thriller.
Based on a novel by Robert C. O’Brien, Z For Zachariah is set in a post-apocalyptic landscape, but is seemingly more in the tradition of films like Knife in the Water and Dead Calm. “In the wake of a nuclear war, where a young woman survives on her own, fearing she may actually be the proverbial last woman on earth, until she discovers the most astonishing sight of her life: another human being. A distraught scientist, hes nearly been driven mad by radiation exposure and his desperate search for others. A fragile, imperative strand of trust connects them. But when a stranger enters the valley, their precarious bond begins to unravel.”
The film looks beautiful, and I very much dig that the threat is of the intimate kind in this setting. Hopefully the dread and discomfort, like Compliance, are real deal. Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave), Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Chris Pine star. Nissar Modi scripts.
