In anticipation of Ex Machinas well-deserved theater expansion this weekend, A24 Films has dropped a brand new, red band preview for the film, which moves, shakes and allures the viewer toward Alex Garland’s warped, incredible vision of A.I. and gender relationships.
Ex Machina is brilliant. Its unsettling and empowering, a sci-fi horror fable about the way men attempt to control, possess and create women. Its a stunning film, and like It Follows, its great that each weekend sees it grow. In Ex Machina, Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Testcharging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathans latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticatedand more deceptivethan the two men could have imagined.
