Two upcoming monster movies from Universal, one being the kick-off of its shared Universal Monsterverse, the other a sequel to Guillermo del Toros kaiju vs. jagers thrasher, Pacific Rim, have received new release dates from the studio.
Universal announced The Mummy, to be directed by Alex Kurtzman and the lead-off in a new series of Universal Monsters overseen by Kurtzman and producers Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel, has moved from June 24, 2016 to March 24, 2017. Jon Spaiths is reportedly scripting. Universal describes the film as being conceived with dramatic intensity.
Meanwhile, del Tors Pacific Rim 2 has moved from April 2017 to August 4, 2017. Zak Penn scripts the Legendary production. I hope we can expect more monsters and more names as sweet as Stacker Pentecost. And I sure hope they rebuild Cherno Alpha.
Finally, Universal has dated Untitled Universal Monster Franchise Film for March 30, 2018. No word on what monster will follow The Mummy just yet.
