Penny Dreadful Promos Capture Body and Soul

Showtime has released a series of stylistic promos speaking to the darkness within the ensemble of Penny Dreadful.

The most intriguing aspect of trailers and teases for Penny Dreadful’s upcoming second season are the occult leanings. A séance featured prominently in the first, thanks to Eva Green’s stunning performance as the possessed, but the first eight episodes of the series were largely concerned with anguish, guilt, possession and vampires. This May, it promises to get more mystic.

These new promos are imbued with that atmosphere, paying brief lip service to occult-ish “as above, so below” balance. Then there’s the cutesy, animated ”History of the Occult” teaser—which serves as a basic timeline with some lovely visuals—and the fact that Helen McCrory’s Madame Kali has a much bigger presence in Season Two.

Penny Dreadful’s second go “will find Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) forming a deeper bond as the group, including Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), and Sembene (Danny Sapani), unite to banish the evil forces that threaten to destroy them. Meanwhile, Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), the Creature (Rory Kinnear) and Brona (Billie Piper) are all waging battles of their own. Two-time Tony® Award winner Patti LuPone will guest star as a mysterious character of great importance in Vanessa’s past. Helen McCrory returns as Evelyn Poole (a.k.a. Madame Kali), the seductive spiritualist who will pose a unique threat to our protagonists this season, along with Simon Russell Beale, who is back as eccentric Egyptologist Ferdinand Lyle. Additional guest stars include Douglas Hodge as a Scotland Yard investigator; Sarah Greene as Poole’s powerful daughter, Hecate; and Jonny Beauchamp as a man with a singular past.”

Penny Dreadful returns May 3rd on Showtime.
