Showtime has released a series of stylistic promos speaking to the darkness within the ensemble of Penny Dreadful.
The most intriguing aspect of trailers and teases for Penny Dreadfuls upcoming second season are the occult leanings. A séance featured prominently in the first, thanks to Eva Greens stunning performance as the possessed, but the first eight episodes of the series were largely concerned with anguish, guilt, possession and vampires. This May, it promises to get more mystic.
These new promos are imbued with that atmosphere, paying brief lip service to occult-ish as above, so below balance. Then theres the cutesy, animated History of the Occult teaserwhich serves as a basic timeline with some lovely visualsand the fact that Helen McCrorys Madame Kali has a much bigger presence in Season Two.
Penny Dreadfuls second go will find Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) forming a deeper bond as the group, including Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), and Sembene (Danny Sapani), unite to banish the evil forces that threaten to destroy them. Meanwhile, Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), the Creature (Rory Kinnear) and Brona (Billie Piper) are all waging battles of their own. Two-time Tony® Award winner Patti LuPone will guest star as a mysterious character of great importance in Vanessas past. Helen McCrory returns as Evelyn Poole (a.k.a. Madame Kali), the seductive spiritualist who will pose a unique threat to our protagonists this season, along with Simon Russell Beale, who is back as eccentric Egyptologist Ferdinand Lyle. Additional guest stars include Douglas Hodge as a Scotland Yard investigator; Sarah Greene as Pooles powerful daughter, Hecate; and Jonny Beauchamp as a man with a singular past.
Penny Dreadful returns May 3rd on Showtime.
