James Gunn, the director behind Slither and one of last year’s biggest films, Guardians of the Galaxy has teamed with Wolf Creek’s Greg McLean for The Belco Experiment, a new horror film shooting this June in Colombia.
McLean will direct from a script by Gunn, the filmmaker revealed via Facebook. Gunn writes, “The story revolves around the American Belco company in South America which is mysteriously sealed off at the beginning of a work day, and its employees are ordered to kill each other or be killed themselves. This starts an escalation of violence, where we discover the true nature of each and every Belco employee.”
“The film will be directed by Greg McLean, who directed the Wolf Creek films, and it will be produced by myself, and Peter Safran, who produced Annabelle and The Conjuring. MGM will be financing. Were in pre-production now and will be shooting in Bogota, Colombia in early June of this year.”
Gunn of course got a start at Troma, scripting Tromeo & Juliet before writing the Dawn of the Dead remake and making his feature debut with excellent horror-comedy Slither. Though huge thanks to fantastic work on Guardians, it’s certainly heartening to see him toil in horror/thriller territory, not to mention call Belco “the most intense and uncompromising script Ive ever written.”
