Director Simon West has a history of actionCon Air, Tomb Raider, The Expendables 2and when he has dipped into our realm, it resulted in the truly terrible remake of When A Stranger Calls. So it’s not surprising the filmmaker seems reticent to call his upcoming The Blob remake horror, or that he plans to physically distance the film by making the iconic creature less unknowable.
The Blob is a slimy mess of jelly that consumes and consumes and grows and grows. It arrived via meteorite and that’s most of what we know. West, speaking to Den of Geek, plans to make it more “sophisticated.” “The Blob itself will be more sophisticated, more along the lines of Alien and Predator and things like that – much more science-based, the way Jurassic Park made you believe you could bring back dinosaurs with a bit of DNA from a mosquito. This will be much more explained on where the blob comes from and how it works. It’ll be a much more sophisticated creature – because it is a monster movie rather than a horror in that sense.”
Is this just West’s sensibilities, or the product of a blockbuster and studio culture that constantly feels the need to explain and expand? Of course in 2015 we will need to know The Blob’s origin, and of course in 2015, it’s not alone. “This thing’s come from another planet, and also, we don’t know how many there are,” West adds.
At least we can still hope for something as physically and textually gross?
