Eli Roth’s debut feature, the flesh eating Cabin Fever has garnered itself a remake, and it’s a curious case. Announced last year just before production, the revamped Cabin Fever actually used Roth’s original script. Of course, just being under the helm of filmmaker of Travis Zariwny and not Roth, the film would be inherently different, but many wondered what to expect from a restaged version. Speaking to IGN, producer and original filmmaker Roth teases a twist.
In an interview with the site promoting the UK release of Clown, which he also produced, Roth was asked what the deal is with Cabin Fever 2015. He explains though the script and story remain the same, the carnage is switched about. “Its great. And Im saying that honestly. I saw it and I was blown away. I couldnt believe it. Travis Zariwny the director did a fantastic job… I looked at it as like staging a play as an experiment I just wanted to see how it would turn out. So I came on as one of the executive producers I was actually shooting South of Hell, the TV show, so I was unable to be there during the shoot. And I saw the cut and thought that what Travis did was so smart he kept the original script, but he changed the deaths, so all the kills are different. You dont know how theyre going to come. I was watching it, and he didnt tell me that he did that and I was so happy he did because nobody wants to see a re-do thats the same thing that they already know. So he leads you in one direction, with the audience thinking that the know whats coming, then puts a fantastic spin on it. And it looks awesome its a really fun movie. Im happily surprised at how its turned out.”
Will Zariwny’s Cabin Fever remake be akin to Savini’s NOTLD, then, playing with and subverting viewers’ familiarity with the material? The film stars Gage Golightly, Matthew Daddario, Dustin Ingram, Samuel Davis and Nadine Crocker. I wonder who gets the close shave.
