Stephen Kings obsessive fan two-hander Miseryadapted into a 1990 Rob Reiner film that saw an Oscar-winning performance from Kathy Batesis coming to the Broadway stage.
The stage adaptation, written by Misery screenwriter William Goldman, initially went up at Pennsylvanias Bucks County Playhouse in 2012. Its now coming to New York via Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures with action icon Bruce Willis as injured author Jack Sheldon and the great Elizabeth Marvel as the violent, fanatical Annie Wilkes.
The novel, film and now play of course all see the author Sheldon rescued from a car crash by a devoted fan of his Misery Chastain Victorian romance novels. Said fan, Annie Wilkes, grows increasingly unhinged and holds the writer hostage upon realizing what hes done to her favorite character. This is perhaps a perfect story to revive in a modern era of fan films, fan fiction and where fans throw constant twitter tantrums when their favorite properties diverge from their own wishes. [THR]
