Alejandro Amenábar, the filmmaker behind tense debut Thesis, surreal thriller Open Your Eyes (later remade as Vanilla Sky) and fantastic Nicole Kidman creeper The Others is returning to genre with an eerie-looking, 1990-set thriller involving cover-ups and cults. Starring Ethan Hawke, David Thewlis and Emma Watson, Regression tracks detective Bruce Kenner (Hawke) as he investigates the case of young Angela (Emma Watson), who accuses her father, John Gray, (David Dencik) of an unspeakable crime. When John unexpectedly and without recollection admits his guilt, recknowned psychologist Dr. Raines (David Thewlis) is brought in to help him relive his memories. What they discover unmasks a horrifying nationwide mystery.
It seems there’s little in the way of “did he or didn’t he” here in the Regression trailer, just shadowy robed figures enacting the stuff paranoia is made of. Amenábar’s latest is out August 28, 2015 from Dimension/The Weinstein Co.
