Ive long had a dream to eschew the midnight movie and see the grossest, sleaziest favorites at the most inopportune times. Say, Sunday brunch or oh look, Cannibal Holocaust on Valentines Day with a serving of Turtle Soup.
Chiller and Mondo, the Alamo Drafthouses Collectible Arts arm are teaming for a new screening series at Drafthouse locations nationwide which will coincide with new Mondo poster or soundtrack releases. Its the latter for their first event, a Valentines Day Cannibal Holocaust feast.
Accompanying the release of Riz Ortolanis haunting, incredible Cannibal Holocaust score on vinyl (featuring a Green Inferno disc and art by the acclaimed Jock), the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin will host the feast in honor of Ruggero Deodatos essential cannibal film, both still horrifying and a precursor to our current found footage wave.
The full release, with menu details and words from Mondos Justin Ishmael and Death Waltz and Mondo Label Manager, Spencer Hickman, follows. Below, find images of the vinyl, the menu and of course, the feast. For tickets, head right here.
Mondo is releasing the original score on vinyl for Cannibal Holocaust, the holy grail of gore films, and to celebrate they’ve cooked up a cannibal feast event for Valentine’s Day with the Alamo Drafthouse. The score by Riz Ortolani will be available for the first time on vinyl and comes with incredible original art by Jock and a “Green Inferno” disc. Cannibal Holocaust will be shown at Alamo Drafthouse locations nationwide, launching a monthly horror screening series with Chiller, programmed by Mondo.
“To kickoff the launch of the Cannibal Holocaust vinyl we reached deep into the reservoir of the most insane screening ideas we’ve ever had and came up with a Valentine’s Day feast to celebrate a horror movie that gives horror fans pause. This is truly an anti-Valentine’s Day event and one we’d recommend if you’re looking for an easy way to break up with a significant other but can’t muster the courage to do it via text,” said Mondo CEO Justin Ishmael.
Considered one of the most notorious films ever released and banned in over 50 countries for many years, Ruggero Deodato’s most brutal film (and surely one of the first ‘found footage’ films) still retains the power to shock to this day, it charts a team of documentary filmmakers as they go deep into the jungle to find and film the indigenous tribes of the area.
“One thing that always stuck out like a sore thumb when viewing Cannibal Holocaust was Riz Ortolani’s score, which is beautifully composed, and recorded, offering a mix of traditional orchestration and early synth work. As a stand alone piece of music it’s staggering and I honestly think that if Cannibal Holocaust had a more traditional horror score it would be even more uncomfortable to sit through. As it stands, Maestro Ortolani’s score offers some respite from the violence onscreen and the juxtaposition between the sights onscreen and musical soundtrack have in my opinion never been bettered,” said Spencer Hickman, Mondo and Death Waltz Recording Company Label Manager.
Attendees will be treated to a delicious 4-course cannibal feast during the film:
Thinly Sliced Pickled Tongue (Aperitivo)
Turtle Soup (Primo)
Human Stew (Secondo)
Monkey Brains (Dolce)
The cannibal feast event is taking place in Austin, TX at the Alamo Drafthouse on Valentine’s Day and the vinyl will be for sale at the event and online at MondoTees.com. Additionally, Cannibal Holocaust will be shown at Alamo Drafthouse locations nationwide, launching a monthly horror screening series in partnership with Chiller. Programmed by Mondo, Mondo x Chiller Presents will take audiences on a cinematic journey through over 60 years of horror milestones. Each film will be curated to align with a Mondo poster or vinyl soundtrack release.
