The book had been previously adapted into the 1997 film starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze, Jr., Ryan Phillippe and Anne Heche. It came out in the wake of Scream and was penned by that film’s scribe Kevin Williamson. The movie was a success, grossing over $100 million, and it went on to spawn I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and the direct-to-video entry I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.
There’s no much to report on the reboot just yet. Flanagan will produce the film with partner Jeff Howard and the original film’s Neil Moritz for Sony.
Flanagan helmed Absentia and this year’s Oculus. He’s also at work on an adaptation of Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game.
No director has been locked into I Know What You Did Last Summer just yet.
The story concerns a group of teens who accidentally kill someone and are systematically killed by a man with a giant hook.
It’s interesting to see the “slasher film” peek its head out these days amid a market rife with supernatural fare. The upcoming The Town That Dreaded Sundown is undoubtedly an entry in the slasher arena, and, we’re also getting a television series based on Scream.
