Hours before the Leprechaun: Origins trailer debuted at Comic-Con, I sat down with a very excited Dylan Postl (aka WWE’s Hornswoggle), the new actor slipping into the skin of the malevolent beast that kicked off a franchise with Leprechaun (starring Warwick Davis) and crashed and burned with Leprechaun: Back 2 Tha Hood in 2003.
Over 10 years later, the series is getting rebooted under the direction of Zach Lipovsky and Postl is very eager to spread the word on the project which he says will defy expectations.
Leprechaun: Origins arrives on August 26th (VOD) and September 30th (DVD/Blu-ray).
Ryan Turek: What do you think kept the original series going?
Dylan Postl: It was so bad it was good. I tell everyone, Im the king of getting heat, but Im not going to b.s. around. My opinions are not the right thing to say, but when I care about things like I do with this film, Im not going to hold back on the other films. And theres no comparison between our film and those other movies. Theres no comparison.
Turek: The film has Origins in the title which leads fans to believe this is a prequel of sorts to the original series, but as you can see from the trailer, theres no tonal connection at all.
Postl: I didnt think about that, youre right. This is so different though and so its own thing, no poetry, no limericks its a horror film. I think people are going to leaving thinking this is a different kind of film, a good different.
Turek: How long were you in the makeup chair?
Postl: Two and a half hours twice a day. [looking sad] I loved it. By day three, I was so angry. I dont know why, but I just got pissed. My eyes are sensitive and they had to get the prosthetic almost touching my eyeball. Zach comes in and I’m cussing, I said this is close enough, why does the make-up have to be this close? And he said because we were doing a tight shot and I’m like, every day is a tight shot! Watching the film for the first time last night, I would have sat in that make-up chair for five hours, because it’s amazing. What they did is amazing and incredible with how it turned out.
Turek: This was your first time experiencing FX work?
Postl: Yeah, I did Muppets Most Wanted earlier in the year. There were costumes and some hair and make-up, but nothing like this. It was crazy. I spent a week and a half getting ready for everything prosthetics-wise. I had to get my head cast and, bro, I didn’t know I was claustrophobic, but I was on that day. Thinking about it gives me goosebumps. But it was cool to see and it made it worth it.
Turek: What are you most excited for the horror fans to see?
Postl: The whole film. Because I know they’re going to be walking in one way and they’re going to be coming out thinking, wow, I didn’t expect it to be as good as that. I’m going to toot my own horn on that. It’s much better than I thought it would be and more than I expected.
