Hey, The Poughkeepsie Tapes is Out – Here’s Where to Find It

The film has been sitting on the shelf for years thanks to MGM. It was originally expected to open in theaters in 2007. That was when the studio released an official trailer and issued the poster you see here into theaters everywhere, but then MGM pulled the plug on those distribution plans and allowed the film to wait…until it could release the film this week on VOD with little to no fanfare (thanks for the heads-up, studio!).

I can’t blame the studio for doing this: The film has sadly been torrented to death and bootlegs have hit the convention circuit everywhere.

This was the film that put the Dowdle brothers – John and Drew – on the genre map and got them the Quarantine directing gig. This August will see the release of their latest horror film As Above, So Below.

In 2001, police in Poughkeepsie New York made a shocking discovery ten bodies buried in the backyard of a residential house. Astonishingly, that was only the beginning. Inside the home, police uncovered over 800 neatly organized videotapes detailing the exploits of one man’s decade-long crime spree. The most disturbing part of the find, was that the killer had filmed all of the footage himself from his first moments stalking his victims to their last seconds alive.

Many of the strange disappearances and dead victims held similarities. Soon the authorities realized they were dealing with a serial killer. The hunt to identify and capture the killer was layered with troubling facts and haunting events, eventually ending at the house where the tapes were found. Unfortunately, the discovery left more questions than answers. Did the killer leave the tapes intentionally? Do the tapes hold hidden clues?
