Guillermo del Toro to Direct Smaller Film Before Pacific Rim 2

file_174835_0_Pacific_Rim_97This is what I adore about Guillermo del Toro. For every behemoth project he immerses himself in, he takes the time to tackle something small and, perhaps, more intimate.

Del Toro, who is making the press rounds for The Strain (airing this Sunday), revealed today that before he dives into production on Pacific Rim 2, he’ll be directing a black and white film next! He told Collider:

“Right away, in February/March I should [start on] another very small movie, black and white, really, really bizarre before starting—we start pre-production on Pacific Rim 2 in August, and then I interrupt it briefly to go into the first of next year to do this strange little movie, and then I restart it and go all the way until we start shooting Pacific Rim 2 at the end of 2015 for release in 2017.”

Amazing. So, Pacific Rim 2 work is cranking along. Mind you, Del Toro also wrapped Crimson Peak which is going to open October 16, 2015. That film stars Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam.

Del Toro refrained from saying much more about this smaller project, but he mentioned it will have a creature in it and he’d like to get John Hurt for a role. There’s an actress he has in mind, but he’s not revealing who she is.
