Why is that?
There are myriad reasons you should be tuning in (or DVR’ing), especially as a horror fan. In its sophomore run on NBC, Hannibal has raised the bar of excellence it set in season one. The foundation has already been set and the characters are well-established allowing Fuller and his team to turn the screw in the story of Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter and really have fun. This season finds Graham locked up and on trial for a series of murders we saw play out in season one. It’s every bit as good as you think that scenario is so far. Additionally, the season began with a bang to remind us the show isn’t content to simply tease and spin its wheels. Hannibal – well, I should say the series and the character – has goals to hit and you actually look forward to where it’s going.
As for the surface value stuff: This show is gorgeously produced. All of the money is on the screen. The cast is top-notch and they’re getting even more comfortable in their respective roles – Mads Mikkelsen has earned his place as a good Lecter by this point and just look at what Gillian Anderson did in the time that she had in episode 3 of this season. Her scene with Graham sent shivers down my spine. Furthermore, the show is downright grisly, so that will sate you gorehounds out there.
Smart character and procedural drama and a revitalizing take on the world of Thomas Harris, there’s no reason you should be ignoring this series. Yes, it’s in a terrible, terrible time slot: Friday nights. But that’s what the DVR is made for.
Now, I want to hear from you… If you’re not a watcher, why not? Is there an aspect of the show that puts you off? Is it simply making the time? Talk to me, because I’m really curious about this one.
