9 Icky Mother-Son Moments from Bates Motel
#1
Passive aggressively mark your territory.
Norma Bates doesn’t much appreciate it when high school hottie Bradley Martin and her entourage come calling after Norman. She refuses to let him go on this so-called study date insisting, “I’m just looking out for you!”
Bottom line - So if the girls come a-calling, act appalling. Keep your partner’s eyes on the prize while scaring off the competition.
#2
Employ the classic creep.
In a familiar scene from many romance novels, Norma and Norman Bates bond while they dump Keith Summers body into the river from their rowboat. Norman expresses his feeling for his mother during this gentle moment by quoting Jane Eyre to Norma, “It’s like there is a cord between our hearts” and seals the deal by saying "we belong to each other."
Bottom line - Woo your mother with classic literature cause every lady likes to know they’re special!
#3
Show a little skin.
Norma is anxiously readying herself for her date with Deputy Zack Shelby and proceeds to change her blouse in front of a visibly uncomfortable Norman, who she calms by saying “Lord, Norman, I’m your mother. It’s not like it’s weird or anything.”
Bottom line - Give them just enough to want more!
#4
Spice things up with a touch of paranoia.
Norma, in a fit of relief, exclaims to Norman that the evidence that could convict her of murder has been lost, presumably by Deputy Shelby. Norman then douses his mother’s excitement by saying, “Mr. Wonderful saves the day again. What’s he gonna make you do for this one?”
Bottom line - When good news comes your way make sure to stir the pot with feelings of inadequacy and paranoia. This way you can ensure to have unpredictable consequences in the future to bring you closer together.
#5
Visualize your fantasy.
When Emma Decody stirs up Norma Bates with the tale of Bradley taking Norman’s virginity and describes her as “a locomotive of sexual energy,” Norma responds by glaring at Bradley and having intense flashbacks of her son and Bradley having sex.
Bottom line - See yourself in the moment and obsess about being there.
#6
Inspire jealousy.
Norma attempts to talk to Norman about the dangers of having sex in an effort to discourage his relationship with Bradley. Norman tries to calm her down by explaining that he has real feelings for her by saying, “I like her. I actually really like her” to which an annoyed Norma responds with a very loaded, “Oh…okay.”
Bottom line - When your mom hates that someone else has got your attention, it’s good to communicate your feelings with her, especially when it makes her jealous.
#7
Set healthy boundaries.
Norma kicks Norman out of the car on her way back from seeing the lawyer saying he wasn’t there for her because, "You went out and you got laid!”
Bottom line - When your partner disappoints you, create a sense of failure and sexual shame. This will bond you and strengthen your grasp on control!
#8
Use intimacy as a weapon.
Norma walks into Norman’s bedroom and says, “Norman, Can I sleep in here? I’m still so scared to sleep in that room.” Norman responds, “Sure I’ll sleep on the floor.” Norma then says, “No, I don’t want you to have to sleep on the floor. We’ll both fit.” She then climbs in under the covers and nuzzles into Norman’s neck.
Bottom line – Cuddling is the most intimate thing you can do to keep those inappropriate fires burning!
#9
Use co-dependency like a compass and let it guide you.
Right before Norman is getting picked up to go out and have a normal teenage evening of fun and dancing, Norma decides to reveal to Norman that her brother raped her causing Norman to be completely pre-occupied with his mother while he’s out on his date with Emma.
Bottom line - When you feel your partner slipping away, share an intimate story to keep them thinking about you. Nothing is more important than shamelessly keeping that strong connection alive!
