Oren Peli’s Area 51: Still in the Same Place It Has Always Been

Oren Peli’s sophomore outing in the director’s chair – Area 51 – is one of those great mysteries.  In the wake of Paranormal Activity, Peli shot the film for Blumhouse Productions and Paramount.  But then it disappeared off of the radar.

In 2011, we conducted an interview with Blumhouse’s Jason Blum who told us this about the film: Area 51 is like Paranormal Activity. The additional photography for Paranormal Activity, we went back 50 times. The great thing about doing extra shooting for inexpensive movies is that the cost is low, so we screen and shoot and screen and shoot. Oren and I were pulled away from Area 51 a lot for the second Paranormal. Once that came out, we ramped up on Area 51 again. I anticipate the movie will be mostly done in about three or four months. They can’t set a release date yet until we do all of that. “

That was 2011, mind you.

We’re now inching ever closer to 2014 and Area 51 remains a mystery.  What’s wrong with the film?  When will it ever have a release date?

Wegotthiscovered.com spoke with Blum recently who said: “It exists! We made it! We’re futzing with the movie in post production.  Paranormal Activity, remember, it was made about four years before it came out, so Oren [Peli] likes to tinker, and he’s still tinkering, but hopefully one day we’ll both see the finished version!”

So, the tune hasn’t really changed on this one.  Area 51 is stuck in post-production hell.  There’s some update on IMDb about it opening in some part of the world this year, but when have we ever trusted that site in these matters?  Wake us up when there’s a significant update about the film…
