Maniac Faces More Censorship Overseas

In addition to facing censorship issues in Japan, the Maniac remake is now being banned in New Zealand.  Of course, the mainstream press is latching onto the fact that this is significant considering Maniac star Elijah Wood starred as Frodo in The Lord of the Rings films…which were all shot in New Zealand.

According to a press release issued today, the horror remake has been classified as objectionable “except if the availability of the publication is limited for the purpose of study in a tertiary media or film studies courier or screened as part of a film festival.”

Directed by Franck Khalfoun, Maniac – a take on the William Lustig ’80s film – offers a POV take on the serial killer sub-genre.

Wood plays Frank, a man who – haunted by seedy memories of his promiscuous mother – works in a mannequin shop by day and stalks ‘n kills women by night. Things take a turn in his life when he meets a beautiful photographer.
