A Look at Some of the Best PG & PG-13 Horror Films

This spooky tale of a youngster haunted by malevolent forces takes some of its cues from Poltergeist, but stands firmly on its own merit. Not only is Insidious one of the scariest PG-13 horror films of all time, it is also one of the best. Insidious offers the perfect blend of creepy and suspenseful.

When Josh goes to “the further” to search for his son, the film kicks in to high gear. James Wan really proved his viability in this collaboration with his longtime filmmaking partner Leigh Whannell. Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) served as a producer on the film and his understanding of the haunted house sub-genre seems to have proved beneficial to the final outcome.

The Others is a highly functional and startling film. The constant darkness, due to the children in the film being overly sensitive to sunlight, amplified the atmosphere of this already creepy picture. While the ‘big reveal’ was reminiscent of The Sixth Sense, among other films, it was still unexpected enough to catch the audience off guard. Not surprisingly, The Others received a great deal of well-deserved critical acclaim, upon its release. Writer/director Alejandro Amenábar has a firm grasp on how to keep his audience in a constant state of suspense.  The ‘I am your daughter’ scene was especially creepy. As someone who already thinks children are inherently evil, I find anything with creepy kids to be particularly unsettling.
