It appears not even showrunner Scott Buck knows if Dexter will conclude next season or not. Vulture sat down with the man to get a progress report on season eight and he said, next season “might be the last. That hasnt been announced yet. Weve been picked up for one more season, but whether that is the last one or not has not yet been determined.”
Currently, that unknown factor is not going to influence how the writing of season eight plays out. “I think well still do relatively the same season one way or another because we have some very big stories that are leaning towards Dexters end, but whether it leads to the actual finale or not, well…”
Asked if he knows how Dexter will end: “Oh, absolutely, I know how it ends. But whether its this season or the next season or further down the line will remain to be determined.” He then added, “Dexter is a serial killer and serial killers only end in so many ways, and none of those ways seem to be particularly happy or encouraging. I think if were true to who Dexter is, were not going to end with Dexter walking off into the sunset.”
