Cabin in the Woods Finds a New Distributor

Who landed the Whedon-Goddark creature feature?

Lionsgate has taken The Cabin in the Woods for distribution.

The film – directed by Drew Goddard and written by Goddard and Joss Whedon – had been languishing on the shelf at a financially weakened MGM awaiting release for years.

Initially slated for a 2009 debut, MGM pushed the release to convert it to 3D which never happened.

Cabin stars Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford and Brian White. And in case you’ve been living under a rock, the film is a spin on the ol’ “cabin in the woods” scenario where a bunch of kids head out into a forest and creepy shit goes down.

Except this film features a big twist. It establishes a unique mythology, yet is very self-aware. And it’s filled with creature FX.

In Lionsgate’s hands, I think the film has a good home. The marketing push will be strong and clever and, overall, the studio might have a franchise on its hands.
