Overture Kicks Off Crazies Viral Campaign

Save Ogden Marsh, will ya?

In 1973, all George A. Romero had to rely on when it came to promoting his film The Crazies were posters, ads and word of mouth. Over 30 years later, things have certainly changed, as has the face of film promotion.

Overture Films is tapping into the viral marketing scene for their upcoming remake of The Crazies, starring Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell.

Two websites have been established. The first is the blog Save Ogden Marsh, the fictional location of the film, and was created by a “Kim Jonson,” a Greenpeace-lovin’, environmentally-conscious gal. Then there’s the site of Dakon/Pendrill Chemicals where a user name and password are required.

What’s it all amount to? Something involving the plot of the film, naturally, which tells of a bio-weapon that’s accidentally dumped into Ogden Marsh’s water supply, thus rendering the locals “crazy.”

You’ll see the results when the film opens on February 26, 2010.
