Universal modernizes classic tale
The Hollywood Reporter says Universal is at work on Jekyll with director Nicolas Winding Refn and writer Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road).
This modern take on “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” has attracted star Keanu Reeves for the titular role.
Plot details on how it is being updated are not being revealed. It is being produced by Erwin Stoff and Red Wagon Entertainment’s Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher. THR is right to point out that director Guillermo del Toro was developing a “Jekyll and Hyde” project at Universal, but his hands are tied with a number of other films, including The Hobbit.
With Jekyll, Universal is obviously expressing its rabid desire to redo “the classics.” This year it continues the trend with The Wolfman in November. Success of that film will dictate whether the studio will move forward on other monstrous titles like Creature from the Black Lagoon.
