Prequel couldn’t best Blart
Once again, America has shown its affinity for Paul Blart: Mall Cop. The comedy ranked number one at the box office for a second weekend in a row grossing $21 million, this in spite of early predictions that were placing Screen Gems’ Underworld: Rise of the Lycans as the frontrunner. Still, the prequel starring Billy Nighy, Michael Sheen and Rhona Mitra came in at number two with $20.7 million.
When Underworld made its debut in 2003, it opened with $21 million. The follow-up, Underworld: Evolution, took in a significantly higher debut gross with $26 million. A third strong opening in a row could ensure a fourth chapter should the creators decide to carry on the saga between the warring Lycans and vampires.
Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s My Bloody Valentine 3D took a 52% drop in ticket sales ranking at number six and making an additional $10 million. This brings the remake’s total gross in its second weekend to $37.7 million.
And David Goyer’s The Unborn has officially stepped out of the top ten coming in at number 13. The possession chiller has grossed $43 million worldwide to date.
Next week, it’s Dreamworks’ The Uninvited that vies for box office placement.
