SDCC ’08: Scream Queens are Under the Gunn

Director talks time on reality show

Contestants of VH1 and Lionsgate’s horror-reality series Scream Queens are learning James Gunn (Slither) is one real sonuvabitch.

“I don’t know if any other reality show judges have every admitted that it’s a real kick making girls cry and kicking them off a TV show,” Gunn says emitting evil glee. He has joined ShockTillYouDrop.com at the San Diego Comic-Con to talk about his upcoming projects, hours before he’s schedule to return to Los Angeles later tonight only to then come back to San Diego.

Gunn is one of three judges on Scream Queens, an upcoming show that culls aspiring actresses and pushes them to the limits. “We take a bunch of hot chicks put them in a house and they’re going to do whatever they’re going to do. Hopefully it involves making out and things like that. Then we put them through different challenges and I get to make them cry and kick them off,” describes Gunn. The victor wins a stint in an upcoming Lionsgate-produced horror film. Saw‘s Shawnee Smith and acting coach John Homa join Gunn in the show’s display of tough love.

“We’re in the first week of shooting,” Gunn reveals. “It’s like taking acid for the first time because it’s a trip. I’m sitting there on this panel, these two girls are crying and I feel so guilty, but it’s also a power trip and exhilarating. It’s an all new experience, I’m really digging it.”

So is Gunn the Simon Cowell of the show? “Shawnee thinks I’m the good guy but as it’s turning out, I don’t think that’s true. I’m honest and I’ve said the meanest things so far.” Like… “Well, the other day Shawnee and I got into this argument after a challenge and she was like, ‘How could you not like this girl, she’s entertaining.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, she was entertaining like Plan 9 from Outer Space was entertaining.’ She was horrible.”

Fully appreciating the days which calls for nudity on set, Gunn smiles when he says the whole experience on the show is about “doing this for the art.” You can see just how mean this joker can be when Scream Queens airs this fall.
