Ethan Hawke on Daybreakers

The futuristic vampire movie from Lionsgate

On the eve of the new vampire movie 30 Days of Night, ShockTillYouDrop.com had a chance to talk to Ethan Hawke about his own upcoming vampire film, Daybreakers, which sounds like an eco-consciousness take on the futuristic vampire movie, something we certainly haven’t seen before. It’s also Hawke’s first true horror-related genre movie, so we asked him why he decided to do it.

“I have no f*cking idea,” he joked. “This is the first time I did a genre movie for sure. The script reminded me a little of the script to Gattaca which may be the last genre movie I did. It’s a vampire movie, but it’s really clever. I mean, it’s really weird and it’s futuristic and it’s a giant allegory for the fact that we’re all vampires and we’re destroying the planet. It’s a world where vampires are not caused by demons in the underworld, it’s like a disease that you get, and you have to live off blood, so we’re killing all the animals and we’re destroying all the people and the world, only it’s exaggerated. It’s just what we’re doing, and it’s really quite clever and smart.”

Daybreakers is scheduled to be released by Lionsgate next year. Check ComingSoon.net next week for more with Hawke on his new movie with Sidney Lumet, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, which opens in New York and L.A. on October 26.
