MPAA Verdict in on Teeth and Hatchet

The good news and the bad news

A ratings decision has been made on two of this year’s highly anticipated films Teeth (directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein) and Adam Green’s Hatchet.

The former, a Lionsgate pick-up and an entry in this year’s Sundance Film Festival, concerns a teenage girl sporting a set of chompers just below the panty line. Concern over the subject matter, and a particular sequence in which the titular teeth work their magic, led many to believe it’d get slapped with an NC-17. Not so, however, as the film has been given an R. Lionsgate will now likely lock down a date for the film.

Green’s slasher opus didn’t slip away that easily. Due to its graphic violence – although handled in a deliberately exaggerated fashion – the MPAA stuck Hachet with an NC-17. Distributor Anchor Bay, who has the film slated for a September 7th bow, is expected to appeal the rating.
