Confirmed: Chris Rock’s Saw Reboot Will Star Samuel L. Jackson

UPDATE: Lionsgate has confirmed that Samuel L. Jackson will star in the upcoming Saw reboot, joining Rock in the cast. Chris Rock will play a police detective investigating a series of grizzly crimes and Jackson will portray Rock’s father. Also joining the cast will be Max Minghella who will play William Schenk, Rock’s partner and Marisol Nichols will play Capt. Angie Garza, Rock’s boss.

“We think Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock along with Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols make this film completely special in the Saw canon and we can’t wait to unleash this unexpected and sinister new story on fans of this franchise. This is next level of Saw on full tilt,” said Joe Drake, Chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

The original story follows:

There’s a new Saw film in the works, which comes from a story treatment from actor/comedian Chris Rock and the reboot of the landmark horror franchise may have its star: Samuel L. Jackson.

According to Bloody Disgusting, word of Jackson’s starring role first surfaced on Reddit, along with a handful of photos from the set, which makes sense given filming on the ninth Saw film just recently got underway. They’ve since confirmed the rumor that Jackson will star, and presume he’ll be sharing the screen with Rock himself.

Jackson can currently be seen once again as Nick Fury in Spider-Man: Far From Home. The beloved actor also reprised another big-screen role this summer, as the son of the legendary detective (and complicated man) John Shaft in the aptly-titled Shaft.

It’s also been confirmed that the film will be produced by longtime Saw producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules – who are back once again to shepherd this re-imagining, which will be directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, who helmed three of the most successful films in the Saw franchise. The screenplay is based on a story conceived by Rock and written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg (Jigsaw). The film will be executive produced by Rock, long-time Saw executive producer Daniel Heffner and the original creators of Saw, James Wan, and Leigh Whannell.

The new Saw film will be released on October 23, 2020.
