Why Was Kim’s Convenience Season 6 Canceled?

Kim’s Convenience revolves around a Korean-Canadian family running a convenience store in Moss Park, Toronto. Together, the members deal with numerous personal and professional challenges, leading to hilarious outcomes. After the conclusion of the fifth season, fans were eagerly waiting for the next chapter, which eventually got scrapped, leaving them shocked. So, why did Kim’s Convenience Season 6 get canceled?

Here is everything you need to know about the cancellation of the sixth season of the sitcom series.

Why Kim’s Convenience was canceled and Season 6 never happened

Kim’s Convenience was canceled, and Season 6 never happened due to the exit of the co-creators.

In March 2020, it was announced that the sitcom would be rolling out two more seasons after Season 4, confirmed on the show’s official Instagram page. The post was captioned as, “KimsConvenience is officially renewed for Seasons 5 & 6 on @cbc! #OkSeeYou.”

However, things went for a toss a year later, when in 2021 it was announced that Kim’s Convenience wouldn’t be coming back after Season 5. This shocking announcement was made ahead of the conclusion of the fifth installment. The reason behind the show’s cancellation was its two co-creators, Ins Choi and Kevin White, deciding to step away. Kim’s Convenience’s producers announced on X (formerly Twitter), stating:

“Authenticity of storytelling is at the center of the success of Kim’s Convenience. At the end of production on Season 5, our two co-creators confirmed they were moving on to other projects. Given their departure from the series, we have come to the difficult conclusion that we cannot deliver another season of the same heart and quality that has made the show so special.”

Additionally, producer Ivan Fecan said in an interview at the time how Choi told him he had “nothing more to give” after Season 5. Following the cancellation, many cast members highlighted the problems of the show, from production issues to a lack of diversity in the behind-the-scenes staff.

While Kim’s Convenience came to an end, a spin-off titled Strays started airing in 2021. The show ran for two seasons and came to an end in November 2022.
