Katelyn MacMullen, who plays Willow Tait on General Hospital, understands exactly why fans are frustrated with her character’s recent choices. As Willow continues to defend Drew, despite his questionable behavior, viewers have grown increasingly vocal about their disappointment.
MacMullen recently opened up about why Willow seems blind to the truth, what’s really driving her decisions, and how much she’s enjoyed working with the new Michael actor, Rory Gibson.

Speaking with Soap Opera Digest, MacMullen acknowledged how disconnected Willow seems from the bigger picture, especially when it comes to Drew’s manipulative actions. “When you’re seeing the full picture, it’s like, ‘Of course the audience is feeling like, Willow, wake up!’” she said. MacMullen admits that, since she sometimes only sees her own scenes, she wasn’t fully aware of Drew’s dark tactics, like emotionally manipulating Wiley during the custody battle.
Despite the havoc that Drew has stirred, Willow continues to believe he’s her best shot at regaining custody of her children. That decision, culminating in a surprise engagement, has confused fans, especially since she seemed hesitant when Drew proposed. MacMullen believes Willow is reacting from a place of emotional vulnerability and grief.
“She’s lost everything, there are only one or two people she can cling to and look to for help. I think that kind of desperation…is what prompts her to agree to [get married] to begin with,” MacMullen stated.
Willow’s former partner, Michael, has tried to intervene, but MacMullen notes that Willow misinterprets his concern. “She doesn’t know that Michael is kind of protecting her,” she explained. Instead, Willow sees his objections as selfish attempts to block her from gaining shared custody, which only pushes her further toward Drew.
Amid the emotional turmoil, MacMullen has found joy in working alongside Rory Gibson. She describes him as “incredible,” praising his seamless transition into the role and his dedication to the character.
As the General Hospital storyline builds toward an inevitable reckoning, it seems MacMullen is just as curious as the fans to see how Willow will react once she finally learns the truth about Drew.
