The Waterfront Ending Cliffhanger With Belle, Harlan & Cane Explained

Netflix’s new gritty thriller The Waterfront Season 1 ending left viewers with a major cliffhanger. In the inaugural season finale, we saw Maria Bello’s Belle Buckley betray her husband, Harlan. Elsewhere, Cane Buckley made a complicated decision regarding his marriage to Peyton.

Does Belle betray Harlan in The Waterfront Season 1’s ending, and why?

The Waterfront‘s Season 1 ending showed that Belle couldn’t escape the Buckley family curse of greed and power, as she ultimately betrayed Harlan. Viewers were left wondering whether Belle chose to side with Emmett Parker (Terry Serpico) to protect the Buckley legacy.

By joining Emmett Parker and becoming the boss of Wes Larsen, Belle can essentially control what happens in their shoreside town, Havenport. Before Belle’s decisive move, Harlan had ended his drug-dealing venture with Grady by killing him.

Therefore, Belle assuming power means that she can control and dictate how the Buckley family repays their debts and recovers from financial ruin. Even while betraying Harlan, Belle may have chosen to prioritize the family and restore the dominance the Buckleys once had in Havenport.

Are Cane and Peyton together at the end of The Waterfront?

The confusing love triangle between Cane, Peyton, and Jenna ended on a bittersweet note in The Waterfront finale. Both Cane and Jenna remain technically married to their respective partners, so their angsty relationship does not get a happy ending.

However, it seemed like Cane wanted to work on his marriage with Peyton. After Jenna ended her brief fling with Cane, he reconciled with his wife. It is not clear whether Peyton can forgive Cane for cheating on her. However, the couple appears willing to give their marriage another try.

Actor Jake Weary, who portrayed Cane, explained what the ending meant for the Buckley couple. Weary told Netflix, “He’s letting go of that idealized version of himself and his past.” The actor added, “He’s trying to be more present, and there for his family.”

Cane clearly had feelings for Jenna. However, the actor explained why he chose to work on his complicated marriage with Peyton. Weary noted, “When you have a family and a child, it’s not always easy. Sometimes you have to find your partner again. Unfortunately, it took some people dying and Peyton almost being set on fire for them to realize they can rely on each other.”
