Best Monster K-Dramas Like Sweet Home

The South Korean entertainment industry has treated fans to many monster K-dramas over the years. Some of the best shows include Sweet Home, Gyeongseong Creature, and Parasyte: The Grey. Soon, fans can enjoy watching season 3 of the beloved new monster drama Sweet Home.

Starring Song Kang, Lee Jin-Woo, Lee Do-Hyun, and Go Min-Si, Sweet Home season 3 will release all eight episodes simultaneously. The synopsis of the upcoming season, which will premiere on Netflix on Friday, July 19, 2024, reads, “The world teeters on the boundary between monsters and humans, leaving humanity with a difficult choice. As desires clash, a desperate fight ensues.”

While fans wait for the third installment, they can enjoy more monster K-dramas like Sweet Home. Take a look at the names of a few series below.

Gyeongseong Creature

Gyeongseong Creature premiered in December 2023 on Netflix. The storyline is set in early 1945 when the Japanese occupied Korea. Although many Koreans are mistreated in Gyeongseong (now known as Seoul), Jang Tae-Sang (Park Seo-Joon) manages to become the wealthiest man with a good social network. He owns the biggest pawn shop, the House of Golden Treasure, and cannot bear to lose it to the Japanese. However, when Japanese police commissioner Ishikawa forces him to find his missing mistress, Tae-Sang cannot deny it.

On the mission, he meets sleuth Chae-ok (Han So-Hee), who wants to find her mother. As the evidence takes them to the restricted Ongseong Hospital, they find hostages and a terrifying monster. How will the two fight the deadly creature?

The K-drama’s first season, directed by Jung Dong-Yoon, is available to stream on Netflix. It will soon return with season 2.  

Parasyte: The Grey

Parasyte: The Grey revolves around the day when parasites fall on Earth from the sky. Amidst this, some gumball-looking creatures enter the human brain and control the body. It makes the host turn into a monster, putting the lives of innocent people in danger. Interestingly, one such parasite that enters Jung Soo-In’s (Jeon So-Nee) body builds a connection with the host, and they begin to cohabitate and help each other through the chaos. Meanwhile, a parasitic life team called The Grey wants to eradicate the human parasites and targets Soo-In.

The six-episode K-drama Parasyte is available on Netflix. Set in the same universe as the original manga Parasyte by Hitoshi Iwaaki, the series stars So-Nee, Koo Kyo-Hwan, Kwon Hae-Hyo, and Lee Jung-Hyun in lead roles. Filmmaker Yeon Sang-Ho, of Train to Busan fame, is the director and screenwriter of the series.

Hellbound

Hellbound is a 2021 monster K-drama that became a hit worldwide. Based on a popular webtoon of the same name, the story revolves around supernatural creatures invading the Earth. They condemn humans to hell, which gives birth to a religious group, The New Truth. However, some people suspect the group’s involvement in the monster-related activities.

Directed by Yeon Sang-Ho, the K-drama is a visual treat and contains some spine-chilling scenes. It ends on a cliffhanger with an announcement of season 2. The cast includes Yoo Ah-In, Kim Hyun-Joo, Won Jin-Ah, Park Jeong-Min, and Ryu Kyung-Su. The series can be streamed on Netflix.

Duty After School

Duty After School is a two-part series with a total of 10 episodes. Based on a webtoon, the monster K-drama is about the third-year high-school students of Sungjin High School fighting insect-like alien creatures. When the monsters invade the planet, the government orders third-year high schoolers to undergo military training and fight to save humanity. In school uniforms, the teenagers go through a real war, shooting rifles and fighting monsters.

Directed by Sung Yong-Il, the series stars Shin Hyun-Soo, Lee Soon-Won, Kim Ki-Hae, Choi Moon-Hee, Moon Sang-Min, Lee Yeon, Kim Su-Gyeom, and Kwon Eun-Bin. It is available to watch on Viki.
