K-pop artists HyunA and Dawn‘s relationship has been much discussed even after their separation. The former celebrity couple had been open about the hardships they went through to be with each other and why they broke up after six years of relationship.
HyunA and Dawn initially began dating secretly in 2016. However, they publicly announced their relationship in 2018, further sharing they have been dating for two years. An official statement from them read, “While we knew that [dating publicly] would cause us to be linked in some way, both of us felt that it would be hard to meet our fans’ eyes [while performing] on stage. We wanted to honestly tell our fans and show ourselves confidently having fun performing.”
After a few years, both became more candid and discussed how their choices matched. Dawn shared in a TV show, “We are similar like that. I just follow [HyunA] around. I enjoy quiet things.”
Why did K-pop star HyunA break up with her longtime boyfriend Dawn?
HyunA and Dawn’s romantic relationship set an example in a time when K-pop stars dating was a taboo topic. The duo got engaged in February 2022. However, within a few months of their engagement, HyunA announced her break up with Dawn.
Initially, Dawn and HyunA did not reveal the reason for their break up after half a decade of staying together. Later, Dawn opened up about his friendship and love with the “I’m Not Cool” singer. Per the artist, the happiness of HyunA mattered the most, whether or not they were in a relationship. So, the duo prioritized their happiness without hindering each other’s growth.
While explaining his song “Dear My Light” lyrics, Dawn shared with Rolling Stone, “While I was dating HyunA, I experienced lots of new emotions. Just as the lyrics say, I felt that I would be happy only if she was happy too, and whether we have broken up or are together. I felt true happiness when I saw her happy.”
In another interview with Teen Vogue, Dawn explained why the breakup happened, saying that the person he “loved” back then needed some time alone. He clarified, “At the same time, the person that I loved most said they needed some time alone, so we were apart from each other. It was a hard time in my life, but now I see that hardship was what helped me clearly determine what path I needed to follow. I’m going to continue to think back on that time and follow this path as I move forward.”
Dawn and HyunA’s career at P Nation
During their relationship, Dawn and HyunA joined PSY’s agency, P Nation. The duo released a collaborative EP, 1+1=1, under P Nation on September 9, 2021. The four-track EP peaked at number 13 on South Korea’s Circle Album Chart.
The EP’s title track, “Ping Pong,” featured the K-pop celebrity pair who embraced their chaotic sides for the quirky music video. The response to the official music video was massive, as it garnered over 135 million views since its release.
However, Dawn and HyunA only stayed at P Nation for a short time. The couple left the entertainment agency in 2022. In an official statement, P Nation addressed the star duo’s departure: “Their passion as artists and their consideration and care for the staff became examples for everyone. All the members of P Nation will treasure the enjoyable memories with HyunA and DAWN for a long time, and we will continuously support their future activities going forward.”
In addition to HyunA and Dawn’s departure news from P Nation, the two artists also confirmed their split in personal lives in the same year. But as Dawn continued to be open about their genuine friendship, K-pop fans hoped they might get back together. However, two years after their breakup, HyunA recently confirmed marriage plans with former Highlight member Yun Jun Hyung.
