Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman recently discussed the possibility of returning to the Star Wars franchise as Padmé Amidala. The 43-year-old actress first appeared in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace when she was 18 and reprised her role in the other two films of the prequel trilogy.
So, let’s find out whether a Natalie Portman return is on the cards.
Is Natalie Portman Returning to Star Wars?
No, Natalie Portman isn’t returning to the Star Wars franchise.
Recently, Natalie Portman appeared on Watch What Happens Live to promote her Netflix film, May December. When she was asked whether she would like to reprise her role in any of the upcoming Star Wars films, Portman said no one had approached her. However, she added that she is willing to return to the iconic franchise.
Portman’s portrayal of Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy garnered her global recognition. Her character dies in Revenge of the Sith, but considering Star Wars’ history of resurrecting dead characters in the past, fans have been wondering if Amidala could possibly make a come back.
However, a Natalie Portman return may seem unlikely, considering George Lucas was the one to cast her in The Phantom Menace, and directed her for the next two films, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, as well. However, Lucas hasn’t directed any films after that and isn’t looking to return to the director’s seat any time soon.
Currently, there are several Star Wars shows and movies in the pipeline. The next film may be The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is expected to release in May 2026. According to Polygon, an untitled movie, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and written by Steven Knight, is also in the works and will focus on the story of Rey Skywalker.
