Here’s the Shogun episode 5 ending explained featuring spoilers and a brief recap of what happened in the episode. Dive into our breakdown and learn who is lady Ochiba and how Toda Buntaro survived after his initial sacrifice.
Who is Lady Ochiba at the end of Shogun Episode 5?
The ending of Shogun Episode 5 brought in Lady Ochiba no Kata, the mother of Taikō’s heir.
Played by Fumi Nikaido, Ochiba is the feared and admired mother of Yaechiyo, the only heir of Taikō. She made her return to Osaka and spoke to Lord Ishido about being directly involved in the decisions that would decide the future of Yaechiyo.
Until he turns 16, the Council of Regents is ruling on his behalf. But after being outsmarted by Lord Toranaga, who resigned from the Council and prevented his impeachment, Ochiba ordered Ishido that the Council would now answer to her.
She seems to have a major influence over Ishido as the episode ends with her saying, “The time for politics has come to an end. The Council will answer to me.” So, it’s likely that she will play a huge role in the upcoming episodes where the Council takes the war to Toranaga.
Things seemed to be quite tough on Lord Toranaga’s end. The episode mostly showcased the aftermath of Josen’s demise. But towards the final few minutes, an earthquake almost took his life and killed many other townsfolk. Thanks to the efforts of John Blackthorne, Toranaga survived. Now, he and his fleet are ready to rebuild for the incoming war against the Council.
How did Toda Buntaro survive in Shogun Episode 5?
Toda Buntaro was helped by a contingent of Ronin on his way out of Osaka.
Buntaro made a huge sacrifice play in episode 3 when Lord Kimaya’s assassins attacked Kashigi Yabushige and other soldiers of Lord Toranaga. He was left to fight them off alone, allowing Toranaga and the others to escape. But he made a surprising return in episode 5.
Toranaga told Toda’s wife, Lady Mariko, that it took 20 days for him to return. He was helped by a contingent of Ronin. But only two of them made it back to Edo. Now, it’ll be interesting to see what role a brave Samurai like him will play in the upcoming war.
