A Studio Bones production, Metallic Rouge is not an adaptation of any anime or light novel series. Instead, it’s an original story. The anime takes place in a distant and dystopic future, in which Humans colonized Mars years ago. Now, they live alongside an android race called the Neans. One of the key differences between the humans and the Neans is that the latter group requires a drug named “Necter” to survive. They are also bound by Asimov’s Laws of Robotics. However, the protagonist, Rouge Redstar, is a proto-Nean and exists beyond the constraints of these rules.

The official synopsis for Metallic Rouge Season 1 reads:

“In a world where humans coexist with androids called Neans, a group known as the Immortal Nine rises up against society. Tasked with disposing of the revolters, a Nean named Rouge Redstar (aka Metal Rouge) and investigator Naomi Orthmann head to Mars to track them down…but first, Rouge wants some chocolate.”
