With the arrival of Dune 2, fans are wondering if it will end the franchise. Will there be more movies after Dune: Part Two? If yes, then how many films are supposed to be there? Here’s everything you need to know.
Is Dune 2 the end of the story?
Dune 2 ends the story of Frank Herbert’s first book published in 1965, but there are still many more books to be adapted. So, there’s a lot of story still left to tell in the franchise.
The first Dune movie adapted only the first half of Frank Herbert’s Dune (1965). The second half comes to life with Dune: Part Two, showcasing the rise of Paul Atreides after what happened to Duke Leto Atreides in the first film.
So, while the story of Book 1 is complete, there are plenty of other books to adapt. The following list showcases all the Dune Books released in chronological order:
- Dune (1965) by Frank Herbert
- Dune Messiah (1969) by Frank Herbert
- Children of Dune (1976) by Frank Herbert
- God Emperor of Dune (1981) by Frank Herbert
- Heretics of Dune (1984) by Frank Herbert
- Chapterhouse: Dune (1985) by Frank Herbert
- House Atreides (1999) by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson
- House Harkonnen (2000) by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson

- Paul of Dune (2008) by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson
- The Winds of Dune (2009) by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson
- Sisterhood of Dune (2012) by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson
- Mentats of Dune (2014) by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson
- Navigators of Dune (2016) by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson

- The Heir of Caladan (2022) by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson
- Princess of Dune (2023) by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson
With so much source material, Warner Bros. Discovery could continue the franchise as long as they want to. Hence, we might get Dune: Part Three, and more.
How many Dune movies will there be?
Denis Villeneuve has plans to at least come up with Dune: Part Three, if not more sequels.
In an interview with The Times, the director said:
“There is absolutely a desire to have a third one, but I don’t want to rush it. The danger in Hollywood is that people get excited and only think about release dates, not quality.”
So, Warner Bros. Discovery and Denis Villeneuve are expected to continue the franchise with a third movie as Part Two could be a major box office success. But it will be a while before the director comes up with it, based on the second book “Dune Messiah”.
In mid-2023, Villeneuve told Empire magazine that Dune Part 3 would be his last trip to Arrakis as after that, the books become quite “esoteric.” But if Part 3 turns out to be another success story, then Warner Bros. Discovery might be inclined to continue with at least a Dune 4, if not more. But nothing is confirmed yet and only the future will decide whether Villeneuve will return for more movies beyond Part 3.
