An adaptation of the light novel series of the same name written by Aneko Yusagi, The Rising of the Shield Hero is a dark fantasy isekai anime TV show. The light novels initially appeared in the web novel format on Shōsetsuka ni Narō, a user-generated novel site. The plot revolves around Naofumi Iwatani, an easygoing Japanese young man who ends up in a parallel world with three others. They are told that they have been summoned to defeat inter-dimensional hordes of monsters called Waves.
Even though the others get attacking weapons, such as a sword, a bow, and a spear, Naofumi is given a shield. A princess wrongfully accuses him of sexual assault, forcing him to leave and fend for himself. Shunned by everyone, Naofumi chances upon an enslaved tanuki demi-human girl named Raphtalia and finds an egg of a bird-like monster. He sets Raphtalia free, and after the egg hatches, he names the hatchling Filo. Together with his new companions, Naofumi embarks on a journey to make his own destiny.

“Iwatani Naofumi, a run-of-the-mill otaku, finds a book in the library that summons him to another world. He is tasked with joining the sword, spear, and bow as one of the Four Cardinal Heroes and fighting the Waves of Catastrophe as the Shield Hero. Excited by the prospect of a grand adventure, Naofumi sets off with his party. However, merely a few days later, he is betrayed and loses all his money, dignity, and respect. Unable to trust anyone anymore, he employs a slave named Raphtalia and takes on the Waves and the world. But will he really find a way to overturn this desperate situation?”
