Bradley Cooper is portraying the late American composer, Leonard Bernstein, in Maestro on Netflix.
Leonard Bernstein was a gifted conductor, pianist, composer, and music educator, and was known to be among the most beloved and versatile musicians of the 20th century. His conducting style, musical output, and ability to convey the joy of music to audiences worldwide was unparalleled.
His most noteworthy worthy work includes the musical “West Side Story,” “Candide,” “On the Waterfront,” and “Symphony No. 2: The Age of Anxiety,” among others.
Bernstein married Felicia Montealegre, and while he loved his wife, he was known to be a gay man. What was Leonard Bernstein’s cause of death?
Born on August 25, 1918, Leonard Bernstein died at the age of 72 in 1990 due to a heart attack.
In 1990, he announced that he’d retire from conducting. Just five days later, he died in his New York home of a heart attack that was brought on by a rare type of cancer called Mesothelioma.
As per his biographer, Allen Shawn, a pocket score of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, a lucky penny, a piece of amber, a copy of Alice in Wonderland, and a baton were buried with him.
