With the show’s impressive setting, viewers naturally wonder about the Our Flag Means Death filming location. Here’s the need-to-know info about where season 1 and 2 were shot.
Where was Our Flag Means Death season 1 filmed?
Our Flag Means Death season 1 was mostly shot in Malibu, Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, and at the Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California.
Watching the series, one would think that it would have been filmed near oceanic landscapes and places with a lot of scenic beauty. But surprisingly, the first season was mostly shot within the US despite most of its cast being from New Zealand.
Similar to shows like Friends, The Big Bang Theory, and Westworld, a good chunk of Our Flag Means Death was also filmed within the WB Burbank studios. Hence, a lot of CGI was involved throughout season 1, even though some parts of the production also happened in Malibu, California, and within Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden. However, all that changed in season 2.
Where was Our Flag Means Death Season 2 shot?
Our Flag Means Death season 2 was filmed in several iconic locations of New Zealand including: Paihia, Bay of Islands, Piha Beach, and Mercer Bay Loop, among others.
This was a big change from season 1. For season 2, Taika Waititi and the team opted for on-location filming. The following locations of untouched scenery in New Zealand were used in the production of season 2:
- Piha Beach
- Waitakere Ranges
- Mercer Bay Loop
- Bay of Islands
- Paihia
- Howick Historical Village
- Te Henga (Bethell’s Beach)
- Lake Wainamu, Te Henga (Bethell’s Beach)
These shooting locations not only proved to be great filming spots, but they’ve also become very popular tourist spots. (via NewZealand.com)
