Who is Joy Boy in One Piece?
Joy Boy is a significant name in the One Piece lore. The title applies to two people now. The first and the only one we’ve known for a while is a figure from the Void Century. He has a significant part in Fish-Man Island’s history and he also left a mysterious treasure at Laugh Tale.
The first encounter we had with him was when Robin was reading the Poneglyph at the Sea Forest in Fish-Man Island. According to the Poneglyphs, apparently, Joy Boy was going to come back around 800 years later, following the Void Century.
During the Void Century, the denizens of Fish-Man Island promised something to Joy Boy. He tried to lift Noah (the big ship made during the Void Century) with help from Poseidon (one of the Ancient Weapons). But he didn’t get to keep his promise to Fish-Man Island for reasons we don’t know yet. Later on, Zunesha became one of his companions. He is also the one who left the legendary One Piece treasure at Laugh Tale.
This Joy Boy left behind messages related to his comeback. One message was his apology to Fish-Man Island and Poseidon for breaking his promise. He also mentioned someone will carry this promise out in the future. The other message was at Laugh Tale. Roger named the island Laugh Tale after finding out about Joy Boy and the true history of the world. Joy Boy also had a connection to Wano and Oden was supposed to prepare for his comeback.
Is Luffy Joy Boy?
After Kaido knocked out Luffy during their rooftop battle, Luffy awakens his Devil Fruit and transforms into Gear 5. His heartbeat was playing a distinct rhythm which Zunesha calls the Drums of Liberation. Zunesha then said that Joy Boy had returned.
When Luffy defeated Kaido, Kaido remembered an old conversation with King where he said Joy Boy was the one that would defeat him. In that moment, Kaido also acknowledged Luffy as Joy Boy.
