I Am Legend 2 is an upcoming post-apocalyptic action thriller film. I Am Legend is based on the 1954 book of the same name by Richard Matheson and the 1971 film The Omega Man by John William Corrington and Joyce H. Corrington. Following its release, the movie garnered a 68% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and $585.4 million at the global box office against a $150 million budget. Initially, there were plans for a prequel about Neville’s life before the outbreak with Smith returning, but the project was ultimately scrapped.
In February 2023, Akiva Goldsman, the co-screenwriter of the original film, returned to Warner Bros. Pictures after signing a multi-year deal and revealed that the I Am Legend sequel was one of two projects he would be part of along with the sequel for the 2005’s Constantine, starring Keanu Reeves.
According to Goldsman, the upcoming film will be more faithful to Matheson’s book by following the alternate ending. “We trace back to the original Matheson book, and the alternate ending as opposed to the released ending in the original film,” he told Deadline. “What Matheson was talking about was that man’s time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end. That’s a really interesting thing we’re going to get to explore. There will be a little more fidelity to the original text.”
Goldsman credited the HBO series The Last of Us, developed from the 2013 video game of the same name by Naughty Dog, as a major influence for his decision to return to this franchise, revealing that the sequel will be set a few decades later.
“I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20-30-year lapse,” Goldsman added. “You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as Man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens? That will be especially visual in New York. I don’t know if they’ll climb up to the Empire State Building, but the possibilities are endless.”
Much about the project is being strictly kept under wraps. However, with the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, production will not have begun, so, it can be speculated that I Am Legend 2 will come out in 2025 at the earliest.
