After the mammoth success of Maverick, the Top Gun 3 release date has been on the minds of many Tom Cruise fans. The sequel brought Pete “Maverick” Mitchell back to train a detachment of graduates for a special assignment, which he eventually led himself. With the veteran aviator showing that he’s still the best in the Navy, many are wondering if he will be back for another Top Gun outing. Will it ever happen?

Is there a Top Gun 3 release date?
Top Gun 3 does not have an official release date yet.
Currently, a follow-up to Top Gun: Maverick hasn’t officially been greenlit. Director Joseph Kosinski has shown a lot of interest in it. But the film isn’t entirely confirmed to happen yet. When Variety approached producer Jerry Bruckheimer to question about Top Gun 3, here’s what he had to say:
“He’s [Tom Cruise] in the middle of shooting Mission Impossible, he’s got a lot of very difficult, hard stunts he’s doing…It’s not the time to take attention away from what’s important to him right now.”
That is the reality of Top Gun 3 at the moment. Until Tom Cruise is done with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part II, nothing is completely on the table.
But that doesn’t mean that Top Gun 3 is canceled. Maverick brought in $718 million at the domestic box office and $1.495 billion worldwide. It fetched Tom Cruise well over $100 million. So, whether another Top Gun movie will happen isn’t the right question. When it will happen is what we should wonder because there’s a high chance that it will be developed.
As mentioned above, Cruise is currently occupied with MI 8. Post that, he also has 2 other projects that he could focus on. One is his infamous Space film, while the other is a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow. Whether Cruise finds the right story for Top Gun 3 to prioritize it ahead of those films remains to be seen. But we can be sure it won’t take another 36 years for the 61-year-old to develop a three-quel. If it gets greenlit, it might happen within the next 3-5 years, if not more.
