Despite over a decade of waiting, Sherlock Holmes 3‘s release date is still on the minds of many Robert Downey Jr. fans. The second installment allowed the great detective to survive and even teased another film, which has since been stuck in development limbo. But will we finally get it?
Here’s all the Sherlock Holmes 3 release date information we know so far, and all the details on when it is coming out.
Is there a Sherlock Holmes 3 release date?
Sherlock Holmes 3 does not have an official release date yet, but it will likely be announced in the future.
The film still hasn’t found its footing. It initially got a release date of December 2020, which was later pushed to December 2021 when Dexter Fletcher took over the project as its director. But since then, updates on it have been very slow, as things didn’t pan out the way they were supposed to.
However, Robert Downey Jr.’s wife and producing partner, Susan Downey said that Sherlock Holmes 3 is still “a priority” for them. In May 2023, here’s what she revealed in an UnWrapped podcast:
“Here’s what I can tell you. Prior to this, we had lunch together with Robert… It was a very specific topic of conversation, so yes. It is in the hopper. We’re gonna do it when it’s right with the right people, but it is a priority for the company and a priority for Robert.”
This seems like a promising statement for RDJ fans who have been waiting for a follow-up to the ending of A Game of Shadows. Unfortunately, we might have to wait a little longer to find out about the release date because nothing is concrete at the moment of writing. The Downeys are busy producing multiple projects under their Team Downey banner. So, Sherlock Holmes 3 will not move forward until they find the right story, and we shouldn’t expect it to happen before the second half of 2025, or even 2026.
Where is Sherlock Holmes 3 coming out?
Sherlock Holmes 3 is expected to come out in the theaters once we get its official release date.
If the movie does end up happening, then we should expect Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law to be back as Holmes and Watson. Along with them, Kelly Reilly’s Mary, and Stephen Fry’s Mycroft Holmes might also return.
