With Meg 2: The Trench playing in the theaters, the Meg 3 release date is highly anticipated by horror fans. The Jason Statham-led shark franchise is turning into a MonsterVerse replacement option for Warner Bros. Discovery. Meg 2: The Trench builds upon the setups from the first film and leaves viewers wondering if a Meg 3 is also coming out.

Is there a Meg 3 release date?
The Meg 3 release date is predicted to arrive by 2026 or later.
At the moment of writing, Meg 3 has not been officially greenlit. Meg 2: The Trench arrived exactly 5 years after The Meg came out in 2018. The first one managed to gross $530 million at the box office, which ensured a sequel. But when asked about Meg 3’s possibility, here’s what the director of Meg 2, Ben Wheatley told Total Film before his film was released:
“You don’t want to talk about it until Meg 2 is out”
But he continued to say that he is hopeful for a threequel to happen:
“But I hope so. There’s a lot more to explore in that world. It’s very rich. The international-ness of it is very interesting.”
So clearly, the answer to whether Meg 3 will happen depends upon the performance of Meg 2: The Trench at the box office. Right now, the future of many Warner Bros. Discovery franchises depends upon the box office results of their latest outings, and Meg 3 also lies in the same category.
It reportedly needs to surpass a threshold of $380 million worldwide to be called a success. Anything above that should ensure a threequel for the franchise. Assuming that it will perform decently, we should expect Meg 3 to arrive by August 2026 or 2027, getting a similar release window as its predecessors.

What to expect from Meg 3
As the title of Meg 2: The Trench suggests, we literally get to journey the Mariana Trench in the movie. But the world under the thermocline isn’t fully explored and is confirmed to have more monstrous creatures, which is a tantalizing prospect after we saw a giant Octopus emerge from it in Meg 2. With Haiqi still alive along with more incoming Megalodons, there’s plenty that Meg 3 will have to offer story-wise.
If Meg 3 happens, we should expect the likes of Jason Statham’s Jonas Taylor, Cliff Curtis’ Mac, Page Kennedy’s Mac, Wu Jing’s Jiuming, and Shuya Sophia Cai’s Meiying to return along with some new additions to the cast.
