Social media posts concerning Simone Biles Kamala Harris contributions have been making the rounds. The claim is that the Olympic gymnast plans on donating upwards of $4 million to the Harris–Walz campaign. Simone Biles’ political endorsements and donations are not well-known, though given some recent jabs Biles seemingly made against Donald Trump, the rumor could feel like it’s true. Here’s an explanation of whether Simone Biles has really made a significant donation to the 2024 Harris campaign.
Simone Biles Kamala Harris donation claim explained
Rumors that Simone Biles will be making a $4 million donation to the Kamala Harris campaign are unsubstantiated, despite several posts claiming otherwise on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok.
A post on X from August 6 claims that a supposed source from Sports Illustrated has said that Biles will “formally announce her donation of $4M to the #HarrisWalz campaign.” It goes further to say that this sum is meant to represent $1M for the four medals the gymnast won at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This rumor has been circulated on other social media sites like TikTok as well.
However, no link is provided to any article from Sports Illustrated in the post on X. Users responding to the post who ask for a link to a source are given one to the Harris-Waltz campaign site instead by the original author.
Given that we estimate the net worth of Simone Biles to be around $16-17 million in 2024, $4 million would be an extraordinary sum from the gymnast. There’s also the trouble that the contribution limit for an individual to a candidate is $3,300 for 2023-24 federal elections. There are ways to get around this limit by contributing to various Super PACs, but the claim says that Biles is contributing directly to the Harris campaign.
It’s understandable why this rumor is believable. On August 2, Simone Biles wrote on X “I love my black job” in an indirect response to a comment made by Donald Trump at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention on July 31.
