In The Boys Season 4 Episode 1, we see The Deep spit out some food as Homelander enters the room. Viewers are likely wondering why he does this as he seemed enthused about the buffet just a few moments earlier. We’ll examine why The Deep wouldn’t want to be seen eating in front of Homelander below.
Why does The Deep spit the food out when he sees Homelander in The Boys S04E01?
One of the more confusing scenes in The Boys Season 4 so far is when The Deep spits out his food when Homelander enters the buffet in Episode 1. Just moments before, he was commenting on how good the food was to A-Train, so what gives?
While we don’t get an overt explanation of The Deep’s behavior, he likely spits the food out for one of two reasons:
- He doesn’t want Homelander to think he’s being disrespectful by not paying full attention to him.
- He doesn’t want Homelander to make derogatory comments to him about eating.
The Deep is a pathetic, spineless suck-up, and that’s what’s kept him alive when so many other members of the Seven have died. As we see earlier in the episode, when Homelander tells The Deep to perform fellatio on A-Train, he puts up little protest despite his obvious discomfort with the scenario. The Deep will defer to Homelander in any situation, and because of that, he’s rarely at risk of Homelander’s ire. Homelander might bully The Deep, but he manages to fly under the radar most of the time. He might instinctively spit out the food, so there’s no chance Homelander might think The Deep isn’t entirely focused on whatever he has to say.
Alternatively, Homelander has bullied other supes about their eating habits in the past. In particular, when A-Train was sidelined after breaking his leg, Homelander called him fat on more than one occasion. We’ve seen The Deep eating junk food multiple times throughout the series, and he might comfort eat. As such, he’s probably on guard against possible criticism from Homelander, which would cause him to immediately spit out his food when he entered the room.
