Rainfall Films, who previously made headlines with their Wonder Woman short in 2013, are back with an all-new fan film, this time inspired by the classic Nintendo video game series, Metroid. Titled Metroid: The Sky Calls, the film was written/directed by Sam Balcomb and stars Jessica Chobot as the live-action Samus and America Young as the motion capture of the bounty hunter. Not a direct adaptation of any of the titles from the long-running series, “The Sky Calls” takes its cues from the films that inspired the original series, namely Ridley Scott’s Alien, which was so influential one of the prime antagonists of the series was named after the director. The short highlights the exploration and isolation of Samus’ world over the gun-toting action, and melds it all with VHS transfers and custom-scanned 16mm film stock.
It was revealed earlier this year that Nintendo was preparing to reconsider their stance on feature film adaptations of the games, which they’ve famously been opposed to after the trainwreck that was the Super Mario Bros. movie in 1993. Maybe Metroid: The Sky Calls will show the video game giant the possibilities for their character.
