All eyes were on the Indiana Jones and the Great Circle trailer during yesterday’s Xbox Developer Direct, but a more eagle-eyed viewer managed to spot a Quake 6 tease hidden within it. While the tease only appears very briefly, fans are hoping they’re finally getting a new game in the franchise.
Quake 6 may be developed by MachineGames
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle got a 13-minute presentation during the show. During that presentation, viewers were shown a whiteboard at developer MachineGames’ studio that showed off some of the game’s puzzle designs. On the left side of that whiteboard, partially obscured and blurred by the camera angle, were the words “Quake 6” and the franchise’s logo.
The tease, as spotted by ResetEra, can be seen for just two seconds. For all we know, it could have originated from a bored employee doodling on the board, but that hasn’t prevented players from hoping for a new game in the franchise. The problem is that many are confused because the last numbered installment in the Quake franchise was Quake 4 back in 2005.
Since the release of Quake 4, there has also been Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and Quake Champions, as well as remasters of the first games. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is considered a spinoff in the franchise and more of a successor to Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. However, the free-to-play game Quake Champions is thought to be a main entry in the Quake franchise and is likely to be the missing Quake 5.
Neither MachineGames nor Bethesda have commented on the tease so far, so we’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out if Quake 6 really is in development. As a first-party studio for Microsoft, there’s a chance the game may be exclusive to Xbox and PC, although those on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch will be hoping otherwise.
