Skull & Bones Delayed Into 2023, Ubisoft Issues Statement

Skull & Bones has been delayed an impressive number of times, but Ubisoft had finally settled on a firm November release date, signaling that the troubled pirate game was finally coming out. However, the publisher has pushed the game one more time and stated that it is now releasing on March 9, 2023 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Stadia, and Amazon Luna.

Ubisoft explained the delay on the game’s Twitter account. The team noted that development was finished, but, citing feedback from recent technical tests, it wanted to further balance and polish the game to make it “the best experience.” More tests are also incoming, as well as an open beta in the “near future.”

This latest push is just more turbulence for a game that has braved tough waters for almost a decade. Skull & Bones started development in 2013 as a multiplayer spin-off to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag before spinning off into its own title. It was revealed at E3 2017 and initially scheduled to release in 2018 before being delayed more and more as the years rolled on. According to a Kotaku report, it suffered from a lack of direction, muddled design, and poor management, which helps explain its constantly shifting release window.
